Eight golf courses to take a swing at

"Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening – and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented."

- Arnold Palmer, American professional golfer

When spoken like that, it’s no wonder that we have eight popular golf courses here in Selwyn alone! For your convenience, we have compiled a list of these courses and what you need to know.

McCelland Road, Weedons

This 18-hole, par 73 golf course challenges even the best of golfers with its tree-lined fairways and many doglegs.

Easily accessible by the public, this golf course is just 25 minutes from Christchurch’s city centre, and only a 2-minute drive away from Rolleston.

And if you’re looking for reasonable prices, Weedons Country Club’s green fees are $30 for those playing with a member, $35 for NZ affiliated members, and $40 for those non-affiliated.

Weedons Country Club welcomes everyone who wants to get involved. From Women’s Golf on Wednesdays and Saturdays, to embracing beginners who are looking for coaching, they encourage everyone to take a swing.

Boundary Road, Lincoln

For those looking for a picturesque escape, Lincoln Golf Club offers spectacular scenery!

With uninterrupted views to the Southern Alps, this 9-hole course provides the perfect retreat for those seeking a quiet round of golf.

Its members have been excited by the many features that have been added over the years, and the club is always welcoming to newcomers, who enjoy the friendships they create and build through the golf club.

With Green Fees $25 for full or part round, there is no excuse that this golf course shouldn’t make it onto your list of courses to try out.

2597 Homebush Road, Glentunnel

$30 is a reasonable price for 18 holes or $20 for 9 holes, especially from a club that offers outstanding soil-based greens, well maintained fairways, plantings of strategically placed trees and a magnificent wandering creek which bisects 6 holes.

Hororata Golf Club is purposely designed to create a memorable experience for all skill sets. New members are welcomed and once you’re finished with golf, there are plenty of nearby activities that can keep you entertained, including the Glentunnel Holiday park which is a popular and fun camping ground adjacent to the 18th tee.

Café on the Green, located at the golf course, is fast becoming a popular cafe destination.

Located only 35 minutes west of Christchurch, take the time to check this club out!

Burnham Military Camp, Aylesbury Road, Burnham

This club offers one of the easiest to access and flattest terrains to play 9 or 18 holes.

With only one water hazard on the course and no bunkers, this club welcomes all levels of players, from the skilled to the novices. And for those raising an eyebrow thinking this might be too easy a course, most fairways are tightly tree-lined which requires accuracy off the tee and pinpoint shot making into the greens.

Green fees are very affordable at $20 for 18 holes or $10 for 9 holes. With only a 25-minute drive between this golf club and Christchurch, it has been a popular golf club amongst locals and visitors alike.

Coaltrack Road, Greendale

Set on the banks of Selwyn River, Greendale Golf Club is an 18-hole golf course worth checking out.

Visitors and members have highly recommended this club, commenting on how well maintained it is and that it boasts shelter in a quiet country location. And for those looking for a challenge, the well-kept greens and fairways present tactically placed trees, water hazards and out of bound challenges on many holes.

Just 30 minutes from Christchurch, green fees start from $15 for 9 holes, and $25 for 18 holes.

Akaroa Main Road, Tai Tapu

Just 16km away from Christchurch, Tai Tapu is the perfect short drive to play a round of golf. With $20 for 9 holes and $30 for 18 holes, there are options depending on your time limitations.

This is a beautiful course, with each hole presenting varying challenges. With tree-lined fairways and generously sized greens this has always been a course that has been popular with the locals. In fact, it is so popular that it was voted the favourite 9-hole course in New Zealand in a survey conducted by New Zealand Golf.

And with the renowned Tai Tapu restaurant nearby, it’s the perfect spot to golf, stop for lunch, then return to the golf course. We highly recommend it!

Feredays Road, Leeston

Ellesmere Golf Club is a hidden gem, located south of Leeston township in central Canterbury.

This golf club offers 18 holes on a par 72 course with flat terrain, available to play from $25 for 9 holes or $30 for 18 holes. Its fairways and greens are well maintained and often commended on their consistently high quality of upkeep.

With the ability to challenge any handicap, this club welcomes everyone.
