A place like no other

Take a breath of fresh air and appreciate Selwyn’s diverse landscapes. The dramatic Southern Alps and rolling foothills rise above the fields. The rivers flow from the high country across the rural plains, out to Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora) and the coast. The patchwork plains are home to farms and small towns across the region.

See the landscapes from the air from a hot-air balloon or by plane. Take the TranzAlpine train to the West Coast and travel through the dramatic ridges of Arthur’s Pass National Park.

The patchwork plains of Selwyn spread from the foothills of the Southern Alps out to the coast, between the Rakaia and Waimakariri rivers.

From the Sea

Flowing from the mountains to the mighty Pacific Ocean, the rivers branch over the plains. The lakes, rivers and sea bring life to Selwyn.
