calendar Thursday, 25 May 2023

location 56 Tennyson Street

Learn more about the connection between nutrition and mental health.

To celebrate Taste Selwyn, Selwyn District Council and MHERC (Mental Health Education & Resource Centre are bringing you this popular seminar of the learnings from Dr Julia Rucklidge & her UC Team.

Despite the advent of medications and other therapies over the last 50 years, rates of mental illness have been on the rise. Scientists have been uncovering that what we eat is affecting our mental health. Identify the food choices and dietary patterns serving as risk factors to psychiatric problems, supported by scientific evidence. Discover the recent paradigm shift of using broad spectrum micronutrients to address these challenges, suggesting an alternative course of action.

This workshop is also available to attend in person.

Facilitated by Angela Sherwin BSc (Hons)

Angela is currently studying towards a PhD in psychology with Te Puna Toiora, the Mental Health and Nutrition Research Lab at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. As a mature student Angela went back to study after a career in broadcast media and gained a double degree in psychology and biology. Angela's PhD involves running an RCT looking at the effects of high doses of zinc and B6 on the symptoms of generalised anxiety. Part of the trial involves biochemistry, looking at a potential urinary biomarker. Her research interests lie in the intersection between psychology and biology, looking at biological foundations of psychological outcomes. She is currently on the Early Career Researchers Committee of the International Society for Nutritional Psychiatry Research.
