A passage to the past, off the beaten path

Are you in search of an adventure that will take you off the beaten path and into the beauty of nature?

Washpen Falls Nature Track is one of Selwyn’s hidden gems which promises an experience that's as rich in history as it is in natural beauty.

The track itself is a labour of love and legacy, with a heart-warming history that started over twenty years ago. It was forged by Tom and Jen, and at first, it was not much more than a path that had them crawling through sticks and shrubbery until a designated trail began to take form. It was through Tom and Jen and their children at the time; Henry, Lucy, and Alice who through their energy and enthusiasm, contributed to the track's growth from a simple pathway to a fully-fledged hiking trail.

Over time, with dedication and hard work, Washpen Falls track has evolved into an experience that people from all over New Zealand (if not the world) come to visit.

This trail is unique. Rather than your average hike, it seems to be a passage through time. Historical remnants can be found throughout the landscape, sharing glimpses of the past. Targets used for practice before World War I, mysterious caves that harbour secrets of forgotten years —each twist and turn reveals a new chapter in the track's journey. And nobody can overlook the Washpen Falls waterfall, which is incredibly beautiful, just over halfway through the trail.

The native ferns and ample bush means that the canvas is green everywhere you look, while the calls of the birds act as a natural concert. And if you’re worried about being too tired to get back on the road back home, there are accommodation options including a glamping site that promises an escape like no other. Secluded and serene, the site is a sanctuary of tranquility. If you're lucky enough to secure a spot (book online in advance), you'll be treated to the luxury of hot tubs under the stars.

For those seeking an even closer connection to the land, the shepherds hut and chalet offer cosy accommodations that perfectly complement the rustic charm of the surroundings. It's a chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with the elements that truly matter.

For a deeper understanding of the track's significance, grab a brochure before you start your hike. This will provide insights into the historical points of interest and add a layer of knowledge to your adventure. And there’s no need to worry about getting lost, the looped design ensures that you won't lose your way; simply follow the trail markers and let the path guide you.
