Instagram Worthy Spots in Selwyn

Photo captured at Kura Tawhiti/Castle Hill.

Wherever you find yourself in beautiful Selwyn, there'll be something to see that's worth capturing. From natural wonders to historical sights and even cartoon-based sculptures, Selwyn has everything you need for epic additions to your Instagram page.

Here are just a few options to help you hit the ground running.

Lake Ellesmere

No matter where you go in Selwyn, you’ll be greeted by beautiful landscapes and breathtaking scenery.

But Lake Ellesmere takes it to the next level with an epic display of the Aurora Australis reflected over its glassy surface. The Southern lights are not permanently present, so you’ll need to research when they come out and hope for a clear, moonless night. If you place yourself here at the right time, you’ll be treated to beauty only the universe can deliver, and pictures that will light up your Instagram.

Washpen Falls

Washpen Falls is a captivating retreat, where hiking trails beckon and cosy accommodation awaits.

Amidst acres of pristine wilderness, there’s an adventure at every turn. The Washpen Falls track takes you through a canyon formed by an ancient volcano, thick in native bush and full of bird song. You’ll see waterfalls, caves, and panoramic views of the Canterbury Plains. The round trip takes about 2 hours, but you can spend longer admiring the views and capturing each new vista.

Springfield Doughnut

It may be hard to believe, but the story of the Springfield Doughnut, a giant replica of the iconic Simpsons doughnut, is one of generosity, destruction, ingenuity, rebirth and renewal.

In 2007, 20th Century Fox gifted the town of Springfield a massive version of Homer’s favourite snack as a promotional stunt. It stood proudly for two years before an arsonist burned it down. But as with all great comeback stories, the people gathered together and fought back. A new one was quickly created using a painted truck tyre before it was replaced with the giant concrete — and fireproof — version that exists today. Now it stands as a testament to the resilience and light-hearted nature of beautiful Springfield.

Peak Hill

Nestled amidst Selwyn’s breathtaking landscapes, Peak Hill is a beacon for photographers seeking to capture nature's grandeur. Its panoramic vistas, adorned with rolling hills and majestic peaks, offer an ideal backdrop for Instagram-worthy snapshots.

Whether it’s bathed in the golden hues of sunrise or silhouetted against the fiery glow of sunset, Peak Hill invites adventurers to craft unforgettable visual stories with every picture. Take your climb and elevate some amazing images.

Cass Station

Cass is one of the iconic images from 20th-century New Zealand paintings. The 1936 work by artist Rita Angus depicts Cass Railway Station in a direct and unpretentious style: a charming and beloved depiction of Canterbury’s small, remote communities. And with a quick trip to this little station, you can become part of art history, a perfect photo op for art lovers and railfans alike.

Avalanche Creek Falls

Located at Arthur’s Pass between Christchurch and the West Coast, this picturesque waterfall cuts through native bush and is easily reachable by a well-maintained track.

You can explore different vantage points of the three Avalanche Creek Falls (the lower, middle, and upper) that cascade against a backdrop of rugged cliffs and verdant greenery. Exploring the winding trails will let you discover fresh perspectives on the falls — and new angles to grab some great shots.

Lake Pearson

From the rocky beaches comes a view that silences everything else around. A sprawling mountain range and pristine lake that begs you to jump in during the warmer months. It’s the perfect place to take a moment away from the hustle and bustle of life. When you’ve found stillness, make sure to capture it for your storytelling.

Coes Ford or Chamberlains Ford

Coes Ford is a popular recreational spot on the picturesque Selwyn River/Waikirikiri — perfect for camping, fishing, picnics, and Instagram-worthy nature photography.

The river is often quite shallow, especially in summer and along its banks, lush greenery flourishes with native New Zealand flora. The Ford itself, historically a crossing point for travelers, adds a touch of intrigue to the scenery. Whether you’re seeking reflection, tranquility, or a beautiful place to capture nature in motion, Coes Ford is a spot that’s not to be missed.

Roadman’s Hut

There’s more to this ramshackle red and green structure than you may think. Nestled in nature on State Highway 73, this historic hut once served as accommodation for roadmen in the 1890s who kept the Porters Pass road clear. So make a pit stop, stand in their shoes, and snap a pic before you continue with your journey.

Tai Tapu Library

The little stone library at Tai Tapu is an architectural treasure, built with distinctive reddish stone quarried locally from Otahuna. It lies on land donated by Robert Rhodes with the building itself designed by architect Cecil Wood, whose work also includes the equally spectacular St Paul's Anglican Church — which is nearby. The charming little library was funded with the sale of bulbs from Rhodes’ head gardener:

Flowers being converted by realisation, into a home for the flowers of literature,” said the Governor-General Lord Bledisloe.

The library is still in use now, still growing and selling daffodils, still charming and quaint with its beautiful red stone and thatched roof, still a gem shrouded in verdant blooms that will brighten your day.
