Tucked beneath the Malvern Hills near Windwhistle, Washpen Falls is a scenic private walking experience in the heart of inland Canterbury. Just over an hour from Christchurch, the track takes visitors through a remarkable volcanic canyon formed more than 80 million years ago, alongside waterfalls, spring-fed creeks, regenerating native forest and dramatic rock formations.
The two-hour loop walk begins at the historic Old Washpen Falls Woolshed before leading into the Volcanic Canyon Reserve via tracks, stairs and boardwalks. Along the way, walkers are surrounded by birdsong, lush native bush and panoramic views stretching across the Canterbury Plains to the coast. Rustic farm shelters throughout the property provide quiet spots to pause, picnic and take in the landscape.
Washpen Falls is known for its strong conservation story, with decades of native regeneration transforming the once-burnt canyon into an increasingly rich ecological area. The property is home to impressive Southern Rātā trees and is recognised as part of the New Zealand Rātā Trail, making it especially beautiful when the trees are in flower.
Located close to the Rakaia Gorge, Methven, Mt Hutt and the Inland Scenic Route to Lake Tekapo, Washpen Falls is a popular stop for travellers exploring the wider Waikirikiri Selwyn and Canterbury high country region.
