Temple Basin: Intro to Ski Touring

calendar Saturday, 14 September 2024

location State Highway 73, Arthur's Pass, New Zealand

With the glaciated peaks of the main divide of the Southern Alps in our backyard, steep inbounds chutes and mellow rolling alpine slopes and tarns, Temple Basin has perfect ski touring terrain suitable for all level groups!

This course is ideal for you if you want to get out and explore the backcountry and need a place to begin. The course will give you the tools and knowledge required to make basic decisions on your own and make you aware of how to increase your knowledge in the future.

This course can also help if you’ve been into the backcountry a few times and want to solidify what you do and don’t know.

You should be relatively fit for this course, with previous hiking and trekking experience. You should be at least an intermediate skier/rider, capable of descending most ‘black’ rated terrain.

Course content/instruction topics:

  • Essential (and non-essential) equipment and trip planning.
  • Safe travel techniques and route planning.
  • Uphill movement and skinning technique.
