Awarded six stars by the New Zealand Gardens Trust as a ‘Garden of International Significance.’

Broadfield is one of only a handful of gardens in the country to hold this highest rating. Created over more than thirty years from bare Canterbury farmland, this 3.5 hectare landscape garden pairs the structure of the great English tradition with a planting palette that is distinctly New Zealand.

Some 1.5 kilometres of clipped tōtara hedging divide the garden into a series of distinct rooms, among them a kauri forest of more than one hundred trees, a formal walled rose garden, a hand-dug canal and a circular sedge pond. Throughout, natives are planted alongside New Zealand-raised azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, peonies and daffodils, all maintained to an immaculate standard, with design ideas in abundance for the visiting gardener.

Garden visits and guided tours available; a fine setting for photography and functions.

Open Wednesday and Saturday, 8am to 4.30pm, and by arrangement. Adults $20, children free.
