Kura Tāwhiti/Castle Hill

Wander through majestic limestone rock formations in an area of special significance to Ngāi Tahu.

This walk is also recognised as one of the Department of Conservation’s (DOC) best short walks and has Tōpuni status for Ngāi Tahu due to its cultural reverence. Be introduced to the history of Māori pathways through the land and spectacular flora and fauna.

The area was once an inland sea that began to infill about 30 million years ago and limestone was eroded by water into sculpted landforms.

The area is now popular with rock-climbers and bouldering enthusiasts, and has served as the backdrop for international films including the 2005 blockbuster The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
