Lauren’s Creative Journey: A Fusion of Food and Art

For Lauren Carmichael, owner of Langdale Vineyard Restaurant in West Melton, the link between food and art is inseparable, two expressions of creativity that blend colours, textures, and emotions.
Lauren’s culinary journey began on her family’s North Canterbury farm, where she grew up surrounded by her grandfather’s abundant vegetable garden. Home preserving days and pantry-baking traditions instilled in her a love of flavour, colour, and the joy of sharing food.
After university, Lauren set off on a 17-year overseas adventure, living and working in the UK, Greece, and Israel. Along the way, she was introduced to the complexities of French wine and the vibrant freshness of Mediterranean cuisine. In Israel, Lauren ran her own wedding catering business for 11 years, further developing her flair for creative, joyful food experiences.
When she returned to Selwyn, Lauren jumped at the opportunity to take over the lease at Langdale Vineyard Restaurant. Today, it’s a flourishing venue for weddings, conferences, and special occasions, where her eye for colour and design shines through. Each dish she creates is as visually beautiful as it is delicious, transforming every meal into a memorable experience.
Lauren’s journey into the art world began unexpectedly when a neighbour encouraged her to join a local painting class. Initially sceptical of her abilities, she quickly discovered a passion for painting. Seven years on, Lauren is a key figure in Selwyn’s creative scene. She is the co-chair of Te Huanui Art Gallery in Darfield and a regular exhibitor of her own work.
Whether layering paint on a canvas or plating a beautifully balanced dish, Lauren finds joy in telling stories through her creations. Her work—both on the plate and the wall—celebrates flavour, colour, and the power of creativity to connect people and place.
