Discover the enchanting Knockdolian Garden

Nestled away, within a stone’s throw of the busy Great Alpine Highway 73 on the outskirts of Darfield, lies the hidden gem that is Knockdolian Garden. This historic garden offers visitors a space that is full of beauty and tranquility.

Originally the home of the Deans family, Knockdolian's roots run deep into Canterbury’s farming history. In 1993, the property began anew under the stewardship of Mr. Les Bennett, a devoted rhododendron enthusiast. His love for these vibrant plants is evident in the thriving rhododendron garden that graces the property today.

In 1999 the garden spade (so to speak) was passed to Steve and Michelle Lassche, who continued to build on the garden with their own vision and nature-focused approach. Drawing from a family legacy steeped in horticulture, Michelle, supported by “assistant gardener” Steve, has infused the garden with her creativity and commitment to sustainable gardening practices.

a garden full of character

Knockdolian is a collection of distinct spaces, each with its own character. Wander through the colourful rose garden filled with huge David Austin roses, linger at the cascading water race whose sound gentle sooths well before it is seen, and explore the enchanting woodland, abundant with native plantings. From the vegetable patch to the deep perennial borders, every area is crafted with love and care, offering a rich tapestry of colours, textures, and scents.

The garden is beautifully unconventional. There’s no rigid plan in its creation, instead, an organic approach where "happy plants" are given the freedom to thrive naturally. This naturalistic creativity fosters an ecosystem where birds and beneficial insect’s flourish. Tui and korimako/bellbirds call out to each other, and the tall trees provide perfect nesting havens for matuku/grey heron.

working with nature

Michelle’s gardening philosophy is to work with nature. Knockdolian is a spray-free garden, allowing plants to adapt and coexist harmoniously. Logs are left to decompose, nurturing fungi and providing shelter for insects, tree stumps become seating, while the boardwalk, constructed from recycled fencing, meanders through the native woodland garden and rhododendron dell, adding to its rustic charm, along with safe footing!

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener, a casual plant lover, or simply someone who appreciates beauty, Knockdolian Garden is a must-visit destination. You can’t help but be charmed by its beauty.
