Growing Green Dreams in Selwyn

Plantz.co.nz nursery is situated just south of Christchurch near Tai Tapu and has been a go-to for gardeners and landscapers for decades. Owners Christine Shearer and Brent Schulz bring a wealth of horticultural and landscaping knowledge to help customers find the right plant for the right place.
Autumn is one of the busiest times of the year at Plantz.co.nz, with the soil still warm enough from summer to give roots time to establish before winter. It’s also when propagating, repotting and hardwood cuttings are in full swing as they prepare for the next growing cycle.
Brent, a Lincoln University-trained horticulturalist, and Christine have both been in the nursery business since the 1980s, always calling Selwyn home. They have noticed many changes and shifting gardening trends over the year. Not long ago, a lot of gardens were filled with buxus hedging and white iceberg roses. Today, customers are embracing plants that support biodiversity, providing food and habitat for birds, butterflies and bees.
The nursery offers a range of native and exotic plants, catering to landscapers, consultants and home gardeners alike. They both love the contrast between exotics and natives, incorporating the four pillars of landscaping: texture, form, colour and space.
Beyond supplying quality plants, Plantz.co.nz offers a personalised landscape consultancy service for new garden development or revamping large gardens. Brent and Christine prefer to see the site firsthand, ensuring they provide the best advice on what will thrive based on soil type, wind direction, drainage and sunlight.
Brent and Christine believe a well-planned garden should be both functional and sustainable. Their philosophy of selecting the right plant for the right place is at the heart of their landscaping expertise and has been key to the longevity of their nursery.
Among their standout offerings is a beautiful selection of buxus topiary, including giant Buxus suffruticosa balls that are over 25 years old, as well as standard buxus with one to 3 balls, perfect for adding structure and form to your garden. They also grow topiary favourites like Muehlenbeckia astonii and Pittosporum, which are ideal for shaping into neat, striking garden features.
Sustainability and affordability are important to Brent and Christine. They focus on recycling plant pots, minimising unnecessary labelling and keeping costs manageable to make gardening more accessible for their customers.
If you are after something special or out of season, Plantz.co.nz offer an email notification service. This is also great for those looking to grab a great deal on discounted plants and seasonal specials.
Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just starting out, Plantz.co.nz provides their customers with high-quality plants and landscaping advice to help you create a garden that is not only thriving but also a joy to be in.
